Century-Old Glass Is Model for New Bernard Mug
A hand-made half-litre beer glass owned by a First Republic bank clerk is the inspiration for the new mug.
“He was old-school: hardworking, thorough. He was a fair and honest bloke,” says renowned Slovak mountain-climber Zoltán Demján about his grandfather Karol Maier. Zoltán, who has scaled several of the highest peaks in the Himalayas, inherited a beautiful, handmade, half-litre beer glass from his grandfather. “When Standa Bernard brought over some beer to taste, I repaid him for the wonderful experience with my granddad’s mug.”
That was how the journey to Bernard’s new beer mug began. “The idea to use the nice beer glass as a model for a new mug for our beer came immediately,” remembers Stanislav Bernard, co-owner of the brewery, about the lightbulb moment.
“The design of the beer mug is original and unique on the market. It is almost a piece of art. I personally love the perfect optics, but mainly the delicately embossed logo, which, unlike printed glassware with complicated advertisements, looks elegant, even aristocratic,” said leading Czech designer Rony Plesl, whom Bernard Family Brewery asked to work on the mug design.
Mug gets named after the original model’s owner
The contractor, designer and manufacturer had to resolve many technical issues. It was necessary to completely revise the construction of the original, which was made by hand and blown, because glassware made in serial production today is pressed. “Although it is a revamp of a century-old design, the result is practically an entirely new mug design,” added Rony Plesl. The company tasked with manufacturing it is Sahm.
The new Bernard mug was named after the owner of the original model: Karol Maier. “The mug has a beautiful, clean and barrel-shaped design. It is a solid, but elegant half-litre mug. It is an excellent example of quality craftsmanship. The perfect fit for the cool and full-bodied taste of our beers,” says Stanislav Bernard in his assessment of the mug.
The Karol Maier beer mugs will be available in pubs and restaurants that serve Bernard beer. They can already be bought in our e-shop and at our brand stores. The mugs come in 0.5 litre and 0.3 litre sizes.
